Welcome to Country
Welcoming to Country has always been a part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, including Arrernte culture.
The boundaries between different groups were clear and crossing into another group’s Country required a request for permission to enter.
When permission was given, the hosts would welcome the visitors, offering them safe passage and protection of their spiritual being during the journey. Visitors had to respect the protocols and rules of the land owner group while on their Country.
At Akeyulerre, we welcome you onto Arrernte lands and ask you to respect our Country.
Smoking Ceremony
Arrernte people use smoking ceremonies for cleansing, healing, removing bad spirits and passing on knowledge between generations.
A Smoking Ceremony is used as its own ceremony, or alongside a Welcome to Country ceremony.
At Akeyulerre, we use a Smoking Ceremony to cleanse visitors to our Healing Centre.
Cultural Dancers
Akeyulerre Cultural Dancers play a vital role in preserving and promoting Arrernte culture.
Our dancers perform traditional dances that are deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the Arrernte people, showcasing the rich history and stories of our ancestors.
The performances are not only visually captivating but also serve as a means of passing down traditional knowledge and practices to younger generations.
The Cultural Dancers offer a variety of services, including performances at community events, schools, and cultural festivals. These performances provide an opportunity for the wider community to engage with and appreciate Arrernte culture.
